Hey guys, newby to this board here. Thought I'd share what little I know about swapping a VW diesel into a Sami. I have documented the process on my website: www.Tomsebooks.com Follow the link for Diesel Samurai and it will maybe answer some of the questions you have. I have a 89 Sami with a 1.6L NA Diesel and it works great for the city streets and trail but doesn't quite have enough power for the interstates. For a DD, the 1.6 or 1.9 TD would be a better choice. The early transmissions are better for the Turbo motor and the later trans are better for the NA. Also, the Turbo motors like 31" tires and the Natural likes 235's....
Any questions? Email me and I'll see if I can help.

Ya know I have been thinking about this and I would imagine that it would be at the same rpm you would be at now. _________________
Zuki. It keeps you from becoming street rat crazy!

i thought diesels had rev limiters on them so no matter what gear your in or what gears you have in axles/tranny/tc, when your rpm's max out, that's it. _________________ '91 Tracker, 1.6, 8v, 5-spd, 4.5" lift, 215/85x16 at's, cone intake, DT headers, full 2" exhaust, lotsa bedliner!

Well I think your as good as your injection pump. If it wont go beyond 3k then your stuck. But I am no way near a diesel guru. I would suggest google and see if they have any information on the rpms of a diesel motor. _________________
Zuki. It keeps you from becoming street rat crazy!

The bosch pump on the little VW diesels will stop pumping fuel at around 5000-5200 rpm. I've hit that once to avoid an accident, and when it shuts off at that rpm, you lose power instantly. I don't recommend testing the limiter like that!
